Case 001 Appeal Judgement Published

The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has today published the full reasons in Khmer and English of the Appeal Judgement in Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch. A summary of the Appeal Judgement as well as the disposition were read out by the President of the Supreme Court Chamber in a hearing on 3 February 2012. Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch Sentenced to Life Imprisonment by the Supreme Court Chamber

Supreme Court Chamber Sets Aside the Trial Chamber's Order to Release Ieng Thirith From Detention

Today, the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has granted by supermajority decision an immediate appeal from the Co-Prosecutors, thereby setting aside an order to unconditionally release the Accused Ieng THIRITH issued by the Trial Chamber on 17 November. The Supreme Court Chamber found that the Trial Chamber must exhaust all available measures potentially capable of helping the Accused to become fit to stand trial.

Public reactions to the Duch Appeal Hearing

Seang Vandy, male, 65, admitted to Civil Party in Case 001, from Kratie provinceI believe that Duch will not be released. Personally, and  I want him to receive a life sentence, but it is up to the court to decide of this in their final judgment in the next three months. Whatever the final judgment will say, part of my heart will find peace for the death of my brother.

Final statement from Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch

Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch delivered a 25 minutes final statement to the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) at the end of the Appeal Hearing in Case 001 on 30 March 2011. Kaing Guek Eav asked the Supreme Court Chamber to acquit him and release him. He was appealing a 35 years sentence imposed by the Trial Chamber on 26 July 2010.

Supreme Court Chamber to Hold Appeal Hearings during the last week of March 2011

 The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia has notified all the parties that the Chamber will hold oral hearings in the appeals against the Trial Judgment in Case 001 during the last week of March  2011. The exact dates and times of the hearings will be announced later in due course.
