The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has today published the full reasons in Khmer and English of the Appeal Judgement in Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch. The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) today sentenced KAING Guek Eav alias Duch to life imprisonment, the maximum sentence available under the law, for crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the 1949 Geneva Conventions. 

The Supreme Court Chamber  pronounced its judgement on appeals in Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch on 3 February 2012 and sentenced him to life imprisonment. On this page we have collected relevant background information.

The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has announced that it will pronounce the judgment on appeals in Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch on Friday 3 February 2012 at 10 am.

Today, the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has granted by supermajority decision an immediate appeal from the Co-Prosecutors, thereby setting aside an order to unconditionally release the Accused Ieng THIRITH issued by the Trial Chamber on 17 November. The Supreme Court Chamber found that the Trial Chamber must exhaust all available measures potentially capable of helping the Accused to become fit to stand trial.

The Supreme Court Chamber has announced that its appeal judgment on Case 001 concerning Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch will be pronounced on Friday 3 February 2012 at 10 am in the main courtroom of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia.

Following requests from the President of the Trial Chamber and the Supreme Court Chamber in the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and approval by the Supreme Council of Magistracy, His Majesty the King Norodom Sihamoni has re-assigned Cambodian judges in the Trial Chamber and Supreme Court Chamber as follows.

The Supreme Court Chamber in the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) makes the following statement for the purpose of keeping the general public informed about its work on the appeal judgment in Case 001.

Seang Vandy, male, 65, admitted to Civil Party in Case 001, from Kratie provinceI believe that Duch will not be released. Personally, and  I want him to receive a life sentence, but it is up to the court to decide of this in their final judgment in the next three months. Whatever the final judgment will say, part of my heart will find peace for the death of my brother.

Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch delivered a 25 minutes final statement to the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) at the end of the Appeal Hearing in Case 001 on 30 March 2011. Kaing Guek Eav asked the Supreme Court Chamber to acquit him and release him. He was appealing a 35 years sentence imposed by the Trial Chamber on 26 July 2010.

The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has scheduled an appeal hearing in Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch as follows:
