The Co-Prosecutors' first Introductory Submission was filed naming five individuals for investigation: Nuon Chea, Khieu Samphan, Ieng Sary, Ieng Thirith and Kaing Guek Eav (alias Duch).

The charges against Kaing Guek Eav (alias Duch) related to S-21 Security Centre were separated into Case 001.

Duch was convicted for crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions and sentenced to life imprisonment by the ECCC.

WITNESSES, EXPERTS, AND CIVIL PARTIES

Seventy-four (74) civil parties were admitted to Case 001. The Trial Chamber confirmed 64 of the 93 civil parties originally admitted by the Co-Investigating Judges, three (3) having withdrawn their applications. The Supreme Court Chamber admitted a further ten (10) civil parties on appeal.

Twenty-two (22) civil parties testified during the trial. Nine (9) expert witnesses, 17 fact witnesses, and seven (7) character witnesses were heard by the Trial Chamber.
