The Extraordinary of the Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) organizes an outreach study tour for 200 high school students from Kampong Cham province, February 22, 2023, to provide students a deeper understanding of the atrocities committed during the Dark Ages and to commemorate the victims of that regime.
During today's study tour, all students visited the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21), the Choeung Ek Genocide Centre, the Win Win Monument, and received a briefing by an official from the Khmer Rouge tribunal about the trial of former senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea regime. At the end of the day visit, all students would receive a wealth of information and knowledge about the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders, the brutal torture and massacre of Cambodians by the Khmer Rouge, and their sacrifices of the Cambodian leadership in liberating the country from that genocidal regime.
The students who participated in the study tour highlighted that this study tour is important because it provides them a chance to visit and see the crime sites and learned deeply on the hardships that befell the Cambodian people during the genocide regime. One of the students said that participating in learning about the history of Democratic Kampuchea is also helping to prevent the recurrence of the genocidal regime.
These young people also praised and appreciated the win-win policy of the Royal Government of Cambodia, which led the country to bring peace and social stability. They also thanked the Khmer Rouge tribunal for organizing the program and wish to have such program for other Cambodians so that they could understand, visit the crime scene left over from the Khmer Rouge regime and see the development in Phnom Penh today.
The ECCC outreach study tour is organized weekly for students, youth, and the public, as part of the remembrance and participation in preventing the return of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime. Since the first court proceedings until today, 2023, more than half a million national and international public have participated in the outreach study tours organizing by the Public Affairs Section of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.
