The Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh, on 17 January 2013, announced a contribution of US $ 2.5 million from the Government of Japan to the international side of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia.
Japan is the largest donor to the ECCC having contributed a total of US$78.7 million (US$62.6 million to the international and US$16.1 million to the national side) since the start of the court in 2006. It represents about 44 percent of the entire donor contributions to the ECCC’s budget.
“On behalf of the ECCC, we’d like to express our sincere appreciation for the latest contribution by the Government of Japan. The contribution reflects Japan’s continued support for the important judicial work of the ECCC in bringing to trial senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea and those most responsible for the crimes committed during the Khmer Rouge era,” said Acting Director of Administration Tony Kranh and Deputy Director of Administration Knut Rosandhaug in a joint statement.
