Youth from Svay Anthor district: Visit to the Khmer Rouge crime scene to remember and prevent the resurgence of the genocidal regime

More than 200 youth from Svay Anthor district, Prey Veng province, participated in a study tour organized by the Khmer Rouge tribunal, Wednesday, March 1, 2023. The youth stated that the reason they took the time to participate in the program to visit the crime sites left over from the Khmer Rouge regime was because they wanted to find out more and remember what happened in those places. The youth added that beyond their understanding, the visit was also important in contributing to the prevention of the recurrence of the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime in Cambodia.

Hay Samnang, a youth representative who attended the visit, said that all the youth were very interested in visiting the historical sites left by the Khmer Rouge regime. This youth leader added that the visit provided the youth with a lot of practical and insightful views after listening to the explanations and briefing from the relevant officials at each location. He said the program would remind young people of what the Khmer Rouge regime had done to the Cambodian people, and that they were committed to protecting peace and preventing the genocide from happening again.

The study tour organized by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) or the Khmer Rouge Tribunal today, all the youth visited the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Choeung Ek Genocide Center, Win Win Monument and a presentation by officials from the Khmer Rouge Tribunal on the trial of former senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea. At the end of the day visit, all the young people received a lot of information and knowledge about the trial of former Khmer Rouge leaders, the brutal torture, the massacre of Cambodians by the Khmer Rouge and the sacrifices of the Khmer Rouge. Cambodian leaders in liberating the nation from that genocidal regime.

The ECCC outreach study tour is organized weekly for students, youth, and the public, as part of the remembrance and participation in preventing the return of the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime. Since the first court proceedings until today,2023, more than half a million national and international public have participated in the outreach study tours under the coordination by the Public Affairs Section of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.
