Internships

The DSS participates in the UNAKRT internship programme which is designed to give young lawyers first hand experience in the field of international criminal law. Interns are either assigned to a DSS lawyer or to an individual defence team.

Internships commence on fixed dates four times a year and last for 6 months. There are also short summer internships for both the northern hemisphere and the southern hemisphere. Induction programmes take place on arrival so as to ensure that interns learn about the ECCC and the DSS before starting to work.

Interns assigned to the DSS undertake a wide variety of tasks, including:

  • Conducting detailed research on international criminal law and human rights law
  • Attending court hearings
  • Preparing and delivering training courses
  • Assisting with administrative tasks
  • Speaking at outreach events
  • Assisting DSS staff at various meetings

Interns assigned to a defence team fulfil the following duties:

  • Conducting detailed research on international criminal law and human rights law
  • Attending court hearings
  • Assisting in drafting submissions
  • Assisting in compiling and analyzing evidence
  • Assisting with administrative tasks
  • Criteria

In addition to the essential requirements of the UNAKRT internship programme, candidates for an internship with the DSS will be chosen according to the following criteria:

  • University degree in law with emphasis on criminal law, international criminal law, international humanitarian law, and/or international human rights law; Master’s degree and/or Bar admission an asset.
  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet proficiency.
  • A strong motivation to work on the defence side.
