245 High School Students from Peam Chor District Participated in ECCC Outreach Study Program

Phnom Penh, 13 September 2023: 245 grade-12 students (female: 108) from Prek Krabao and Reaksmey Samaki high school from Peam Chor district, Prey Veng province participate in the outreach study tour organized by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) to visit Toul Sleng Genocide Museum, Cheong Ek Genocide Center, and Win Win Memorial. The program aims to provide the students clearly understand and remember the tragedy of Cambodians under the Khmer Rouge regime, as well as to prevent non-recurrence atrocities on Cambodia.

During study tour, students were greeted and briefly explained by guides the meaning and significance of Win Win Memorial, the tragedy that took place at Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Choeung Ek Genocide Center.

In Win Win Memorial premise, students were also presented by a Public Affairs Officer of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal on achievement of the ECCC obtained from trials and residual works that Chamber is currently conducting.

At the end of visit, students are expected to gain a wealth of information and knowledge about trial works at ECCC, the brutal torture and massacre histories on Cambodians under Democratic Kampuchea regime, and the sacrifices made by Royal Government of Cambodia in liberating the country from that genocidal regime.

The teachers appreciated the Win-Win policy of the Royal Government of Cambodia, which led the country to bring peace and social stability. They also thank ECCC for organizing the study tour so that youths could understand, visit the crime scenes left over from Khmer Rouge regime and see development in Phnom Penh today.

The weekly ECCC outreach study tour, coordinated and lead by Public Affairs Section is conducted for students, young people, and the public seeks to raise awareness about atrocities committed by Khmer Rouge regime. As more than 600,000 members of national and international public have taken part in outreach study tours since 2009 until present day, with the Public Affairs Section of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal coordinating them.
