“Although the Khmer Rouge regime passed and the paint slightly relief, but we cannot forget our bitter history. It's justified that at least one of our relatives died during the genocide.” said Bin Chivorn Monirak, a youth delegation leader from Chamka Leu district.
Monirak leads about 163 youth delegations from Chamka Leu district, Kampong Cham province, May 31, 2023, to join the study tour organized by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC).
While introducing it to the youth, Monirak told the group to focus on their history as he said it is not be forgotten even though it passed many years ago. He added that the youth need to learn their history by reading books and researching the brutal history of the Khmer Rouge that was committed against our Cambodian people.
The leader also urged all young generations, at each site visit today, pay much attention on the presentation and briefing, by stressing that today's study tour is very important as it is a rare opportunity to gain direct historical knowledge from the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge regime, the resistance movement of the Royal Government of Cambodia from the genocidal regime, and the trial of crimes committed during that brutal regime.
Monirak also expressed his gratitude to the Royal Government of Cambodia for leading the country to gain peace and progress in all sectors to this day and thanked the Khmer Rouge tribunal for organizing this study tour for the youth to better understand the history and evolution of Cambodia.
During today's study tour, all students went to learn Cambodian history at the Win Win Memorial, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, Choeung Ek Genocide Center, and a presentation by officials from the Khmer Tribunal on the achievements of the trial of former senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime.
The ECCC organizes weekly study tour program for students, youth, and public to promote remembrance and participation in preventing the atrocities such the Khmer Rouge regime. From 2009 to 2023, more than half a million national and international public participated in the outreach study tour program under the coordination by the Public Affairs Section of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal.
