Radio programme "Women in the Khmer Rouge regime" resumes

The Victims Support Section of the ECCC would like to announce that the radio live show programme ”Women in the Khmer Rouge Regime” has resumed on FM 102 of the Women’s Media Center of Cambodia-WMC (FM 102) since 25 April 2016. The on-air programme is scheduled to run on Monday afternoon of the second week of the month, from 16:10 pm to 17:00 pm; and its two rebroadcasts are done on Saturday of the third and fourth week, from 13:35 pm-14:00 pm.

Apology statements made by Kaing Guek Eav now available on video

In its judgement on appeals in Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch, the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) affirmed the Trial Chamber's previous decision to compile and post on the ECCC's official website all statements of apology and acknowledgements of responsibility made by Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch during the course of the trial, including the appeal stage. The compilation and publication of these statements was a reparation award for the Civil Parties in Case 001.

New video outlines outreach at universities and high schools

This new video highlights part of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia's nationwide outreach campaign which aims to educate students at high schools and and universities across Cambodia. Since October 2009, staff members from the court have given lectures to more than 60,000 students.

89 year old woman attends trial hearing in Case 002

With only one tooth left, Ms. Seat San, an 89 year old woman from Kandal province, finished her packed lunch and a 30ml bottle of drinking water, and continued chatting with her friend Ms. Hem Thom, age 78, and three other women sitting at the same table. She seemed to be active and full of life, despite her advanced age. She smiled and chatted happily with her friends from the same village, while they waited to enter into the court 482-seat gallery.

Volunteer Brings More than 6,000 Cambodians to ECCC

69-year-old Mr. Kham Lun, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge regime, is well known among the villagers in his home province of Siem Reap. Since 2009, he has been disseminating information about the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), and has helped bring more than 6,000 visitors to the court.

Kreung People from Ratanakiri Learn about Khmer Rouge Tribunal

“I was so shocked when I saw piles of skulls and mass graves at Tuol Sleng prison and at the Cheung Ek killing field. I also lost some relatives during the Khmer Rouge regime. That is the reason I came to the court; I wanted to know how the trial is progressing,” said Mr. Kim Pring Rai, one of over 400 Kreungs from La-ok commune, O-chum district, Ratanakkiri that visited the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on 15 September 2011. This is the first time this Kreung ethnic group has visited the court. 

ECCC Reaches Out to Buddhist Monks

“Trials alone, cannot foster the reconciliation necessary to heal wounds of the past. It is therefore my hope that you, being respected monks, through this special and privileged standing in this society are able to complement the Court proceedings by assisting victims and perpetrators to reconcile,” said Deputy Director Knut Rosandhaug in a speech to 400 Buddhist monks at Preah Sihanouk  Raja Buddhist University on 9 August 2011.

Kampot commune council members seek information for constituents

More than 350 commune council members from Kampot province visited the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on 12 July 2011. They came to study and gain understanding of the process of prosecuting  senior leaders of the Khmer Rouge and those alleged to be most responsible for serious crimes committed between 17 April 1975 and 6 January 1979. They were determined to share the information and knowledge acquired with their constituents once they returned back to their villages.

New appointments in the Public Affairs Section

The Office of Administration of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) would like to announce some changes made to fill vacancies and to strengthen the Public Affairs Section of the ECCC.  Mr. DIM Sovannarom, who until recently served as Press Officer, will be Officer in Charge of the Public Affairs Section. In an effort to further strengthen the public information, media and outreach work of the ECCC Mr.

Questions about KRT from students

Students from Samaki High School and National Institute for Education had a long list of questions for ECCC Public Affairs Officers visiting their respective schools on Friday 29 April 2011, a clear sign that the Cambodian youth is interested in learning more about the ongoing Khmer Rouge Trials.

Commune council members visits ECCC

Nearly 200 commune council members from all 24 provinces and municipalities met with senior officials of Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC) on the 28 January 2011.

People from Anlong Veng confront the past

“I’m glad to welcome former Khmer Rouge members from Along Veng today. Many of these people did not really believe what happened here (in S-21) was true, and  some of them did believe, but was not aware about the enormous extent of the atrocities. Today, they had the opportunity to come to see with their own eyes, and that’s make me happy,” said Mr. Chum Mey (80), one of only twelve known survivors from the S-21 prison.

Walking slowly out of the first room of building A of Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the former S-21 Security Center of Khmer Rouge regime, Chea Ron, who had travelled a long way from Pailin province, looked upset as she told her friend, “My brother disappeared here.”

Victims Support Section prepares for the ECCC’s second trial

The Victims Support Section (VSS) of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has begun taking necessary steps in order to prepare for the participation of a large number of victims, in particular Civil Parties, in the upcoming second trial before the Court.

Duch's verdict to serves as reference for Kandal Provincial Court

In an official ceremony on 17 August 2010, all judicial staff at Kandal Provincial Court were given printed copies of the “Duch”-verdict, a document which will now become a valuable reference for judges, prosecutors and clerks of the court.  

ECCC to distribute the "Duch"-verdict nationwide

On 5 August, 2010 the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) started to produce 5,000 printed copies of the entire Duch’s verdict and 17,000 copies of the judgment summary in Khmer language. The publications are to be distributed to the public free of charge.

30 years searching for answers: Missing relatives found at S-21

Every Tuesday and Thursday, the Public Affairs Section of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) brings a group of 300 villagers from the Cambodian countryside to visit the ECCC and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum.

ECCC enters into agreement for the creation of a virtual tribunal

Today the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) signed an agreement with the Hoover Institution, Stanford University and the War Crimes Studies Center of the University of California, Berkeley for the establishment of a ECCC Virtual Tribunal Legacy Project.

Victims Unit Outreach in Kampong Cham and Pursat

"We want to see justice done," was the overwhelming response of participants at a regional forum in Kampong Cham, 24-25 October, when they were asked why the wanted to participate in the trials before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).

ECCC launches new outreach program

113 villagers from Dam Be district in Kampong Cham province visited the ECCC and the Toul Sleng Genocide Museum on 13 October 2009 as a part of a new outreach program organized by the ECCC Public Affairs Section. 

Civil Party Forum in Kampot

As Case 001 draws to a close, and the ECCC Co-investigating judges have started to recognize more Civil Parties for case 002, the Victims Unit has launched a program of regional Civil Party forums, the first of which took place on Saturday and Sunday 26-27 September in Kampot. 195 Civil Party applicants from Kampot, Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Kep and Takeo provinces joined together to receive an update on the processes of the court and the application process. Of these, 87 were men and 108 were women.
