PRESS STATEMENT BY THE DEFENCE SUPPORT SECTION

In light of recent comments that appeared in the local press in Phnom Penh and that have been attributed to a certain expert who recently testified before the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (“ECCC”), the Defence Support Section (“DSS”) wishes to underscore the importance of an independent and vigorous Defence in ensuring the fairness of trial proceedings.

Appointment of New International Co-Lawyer for Ms. Im Chaem

The Defence Support Section (“DSS”) of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (“ECCC”) has assigned Mr. Wayne Jordash QC of the United Kingdom as the foreign Co-Lawyer to represent Ms. Im Chaem in Case 004/01. Mr. Jordash is a London-based barrister specialising in international crimes and other serious criminal offences. He was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1995 and has been a Queen’s Counsel since 2014. The Bar Association of the Kingdom of Cambodia has admitted him to practice before the ECCC. Mr.

Ms. Suzana Tomanović assigned as foreign Co-Lawyer to represent a suspect in Case 004

The Defence Support Section (“DSS”) of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (“ECCC”) has assigned Ms. Suzana Tomanović as the Foreign Co-Lawyer to represent a Suspect named in the Third Introductory Submission filed by the International Co-Prosecutor to the Office of the Co-Investigating Judges on 7 September 2009. The Third Introductory Submission is part of the Case File in Case 004. The identity of any Suspect named in the Third Introductory Submission remains confidential.

Mr. Göran Sluiter assigned as foreign defence lawyer

The Defence Support Section of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia has assignedMr. Göran Sluiter as a foreign lawyer to represent a Suspect named in the Third Introductory Submission submitted by the International Co-Prosecutor to the Office of the Co-Investigating Judges on 7 September 2009. The Third Introductory Submission is part of the Case File in Case 004.

Final statement from Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch

Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch delivered a 25 minutes final statement to the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) at the end of the Appeal Hearing in Case 001 on 30 March 2011. Kaing Guek Eav asked the Supreme Court Chamber to acquit him and release him. He was appealing a 35 years sentence imposed by the Trial Chamber on 26 July 2010.
