First appeal hearings scheduled in Case 002/01

The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has scheduled the first hearings relating to appeals in Case 002/01 to hear the testimony of three  witnesses, which it decided to call by decision of 29 May 2015. The hearings are scheduled to take place from 09:00 – 16:00 on 2, 3 and 6 July 2015, with 7 July as a reserve day, should additional time be required.

Deadline for notice of Case 002/01 appeals extended to 29 September 2014

The Supreme Court Chamber has  partially granted a request from the Defence of Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea by extending the deadline for filing a notice of appeal against the Trial Judgement in Case 002/01 from 8 September to 29 September 2014. The Defence teams had requested that the deadline be extended to 20 October 2014.

Appointment of international judges in the Supreme Court Chamber

Judge Florence Ndepele Mwachande Mumba of Zambia has been appointed as the sitting judge of the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia by the Supreme Council of the Magistracy of Cambodia upon nomination by the Secretary-General of the United Nations. She replaces former judge Motoo Noguchi who resigned in July 2012. Judge Mumba has been serving as the reserve judge of the Supreme Court Chamber until this appointment.

SUPREME COURT CHAMBER PLACES IENG THIRITH UNDER SUPERVISION

Apology statements made by Kaing Guek Eav now available on video

In its judgement on appeals in Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch, the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) affirmed the Trial Chamber's previous decision to compile and post on the ECCC's official website all statements of apology and acknowledgements of responsibility made by Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch during the course of the trial, including the appeal stage. The compilation and publication of these statements was a reparation award for the Civil Parties in Case 001.

Supreme Court Chamber orders declassification of over 1,700 confidential documents

The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia has completed its review of the classification of the 12,000 plus confidential and strictly confidential documents in the case file of Case 001. Among them, the Chamber has ordered that 1,749 documents be made public. These records include Democratic Kampuchea-era documents of victims’ “confessions” and biographies, witness statements, transcripts of in camera hearings and rogatory letters.

S-21 survivors first to receive copies of Case 001 Appeal Judgement

Three living survivors of the S-21 prison, Bou Meng, Chum Mey and Norng Chan Phal as well as five Civil Parties received printed copies of the Supreme Court Chamber Appeal Judgement in Case 001 against Kaing Guek Eav alias Duch Friday 18 May 2012 at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phnom Penh. This marked the start of a campaign where the Public Affairs Section and the Victims Support Section will distribute copies of the Appeal Judgement as well as a compilation of statements of apology made by Kaing Guek Eav during the proceedings to audiences across Cambodia.

Statement by Judge Motoo Noguchi of the Supreme Court Chamber on his resignation

Judge Motoo NOGUCHI from Japan, an international judge of the Supreme Court Chamber of the ECCC, tendered today a letter of resignation to the United Nations Secretary-General. His resignation will take effect in 60 days on 15 July 2012. After leaving the ECCC, he is going to return to serving the Ministry of Justice of Japan.
