Parties ordered to appear at evidence hearings starting from 17 November 2014
The Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has ordered the parties in Case 002/02 to appear at evidence hearings starting from 17 November 2014. The Chamber has also put the KHIEU Samphan and NUON Chea Defence on notice that it will take firm action should either fail to abide by the order to appear in court.

The Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has, pursuant to Internal Rule 38, issued an official warning for misconduct to the national and international defence counsel for Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea.

The segment made public relates to a discussion on the resources made available to the Defence teams for Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea.
Case 002/02 substantive hearings commence on 17 October
The Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC) will commence the hearing on substance in Case 002/02 against Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan on 17 October 2014 at 09:00 in the Main Courtroom of the ECCC. The Co-Prosecutors will be afforded an opportunity to make a brief opening statement and the Accused and/or their lawyers may respond briefly, before the first witness will be called to testify on Monday 20 October.
11th session of the ECCC Plenary will be held on 16 October 2014
The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will hold its 11th Plenary Session on 16 October 2014. The 11th Plenary Session will discuss proposed amendments to four Internal Rules recommended by the Rules and Procedures Committee on the basis of proposals by Office of Co-Prosecutors and Victims Support Section. During this plenary, Judge Martin Karopkin, will be sworn in as Reserve International Judge of the Trial Chamber and Mr. Oliviar Beauvallet will be sworn in as Reserve International Co-Investigating Judge.
Meeting between Civil Parties and Civil Party Lawyers in Case 002
On Monday, 06 October 2014, the Victims Support Section (VSS) of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will hold a meeting between the Civil Parties and Civil Party Lawyers in Case 002. The meeting will be presided over by H.E. Kranh Tony, Acting Director of the Administration Office of the ECCC, and H.E. Joachim Baron von Marschall, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Cambodia. It is scheduled to take place at Phnom Penh Ecumenical Diakonia Center; located at No. 19-21, St. 330, Sangkat Boeng Keng Kang III, Khan Chamkar Morn, Phnom Penh.
Martin Karopkin appointed as new international reserve judge in the Trial Chamber
Following the nomination by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and the approval by the Supreme Council of the Magistracy, His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni has appointed Mr. Martin Karopkin (USA) as a new international reserve judge to serve in the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). He replaces Judge Claudia Fenz (Austria) who was appointed as an international judge in the Trial Chamber effective from 1 September 2014.
Case 002/02 trial to commence on 17 October 2014

Government of Chile contributes US$10,000 to ECCC
The Government of Chile has announced a contribution of US$10,000 to the national component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Court of Cambodia (ECCC). Chile is a new donor to the ECCC, and made this contribution in response to an appeal by the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, and the Royal Government of Cambodia to all member States to come forward urgently with pledges of financial support to the ECCC.
Deadline for notice of Case 002/01 appeals extended to 29 September 2014
The Supreme Court Chamber has partially granted a request from the Defence of Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea by extending the deadline for filing a notice of appeal against the Trial Judgement in Case 002/01 from 8 September to 29 September 2014. The Defence teams had requested that the deadline be extended to 20 October 2014.
Claudia Fenz appointed as new international judge in the Trial Chamber
Following the nomination by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and the approval by the Supreme Council of the Magistracy, His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni has appointed Ms. Claudia Fenz (Austria) as a new international judge to serve in the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). The appointment is effective from 1 September 2014. Judge Fenz has served as a reserve judge in the Trial Chamber since 2006, and she replaces Judge Silvia Cartwright (New Zealand) whose resignation takes effect from 1 September 2014.
The Court Report for August 2014 issued
The August 2014 issue of the Court Report features the verdict in Case 002/01 against Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan, which was pronounced on 7 August 2014. The accused were found guilty of crimes against humanity and sentenced to life imprisonment. The Report discusses civil party reparation projects for Case 002/01 and media reactions to the verdict. A further initial hearing in Case 002/02 was held on 30 July 2014, and, in another decision, the Supreme Court Chamber also upheld the severance of Case 002/02.Read it here:
Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan Sentenced to Life Imprisonment for Crimes against Humanity

Supreme Court Chamber upholds severance of Case 002/02
Today, the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) dismissed an appeal from Khieu Samphan requesting annulment of the Trial Chamber’s severance order for Case 002/02.
Further Initial Hearing in Case 002/02 will be held on 30 July 2014
Following the Initial Hearing held in June 2011,the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will conduct a further Initial Hearing in Case 002/02 against Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea on Wednesday, 30 July 2014 at 09:00 in the main courtroom of the ECCC. Planning continues for Case 002/02 reparation requests
Having successfully conducted the Stakeholders Consultation on Case 002/02 Reparation last month, the Victims Support Section (VSS) and the Civil Party Lead Co-Lawyers Section (CPLCLS) will host a Civil Parties Consultation on Case 002/02 Reparations, which will take place on 21 July 2014 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Cambodia-Korea Cooperation Centre (CKCC), Royal University of Phnom Penh, Russian Federation Boulevard, Khan Toul Kork, Phnom Penh.
Seminar series in international criminal law and Human Rights for Law students
The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC), in cooperation with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI), is hosting a seminar series on the topics of international criminal law and human rights law. The aim is to increase awareness and knowledge of these subject areas among law students and teachers/researchers in Cambodia, as well as to foster interaction between ECCC jurists and academia, with a view to facilitating research.
The Court Report for July 2014 issued
The July 2014 edition of the Court Report features the visit of the Principal Donors Group to the ECCC. The Court Report also features articles on the recent donations of Malaysia, Australia and Sweden, as well as the story of a couple of interns sharing about their experience at the ECCC. Information about the preliminary stakeholder consultation held on 11 June 2014 has also been added to the Court Report. In addition, judicial updates of each section are also placed.
Sweden announces new contribution of SEK 30 million
The Government of Sweden has announced that it will make a new contribution of SEK 30 million (approximately US$4.5 million) to the international component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) for 2014-2015.With the new contribution, Sweden’s financial assistance to the ECCC will exceed US$10 million. Sweden is a key financial backer of the ECCC and is a member of the Principal Donors Group.
Malaysia contributes US50,000 to the ECCC
The Government of Malaysia has contributed US$50,000 to the national component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). Malaysia is a new donor to the ECCC, and made this contribution in response to an appeal by the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Kimoon, and the Royal Government of Cambodia. The international community was asked to urgently come forward with pledges of financial support to the ECCC.
ECCC and Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Memorial in Tuol Sleng Museum
The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) and the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts (MoCFA) will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 10 July 2014 to establish a memorial in Tuol Sleng Museum, in commemoration of the victims who died there during the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975-1979. The ceremony will take place in Tuol Sleng and will be presided over by H.E. Kranh Tony, Acting Director of Administration Office of the ECCC, and His Excellency Chuch Phoeurn, Secretary of State of the MoCFA.
