Statement by the Defence Support Section on the passing of John R.W.D. Jones, QC

The Defence Support Section (DSS) of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) is deeply saddened to share the tragic news of the death of John R.W.D. Jones, QC who served as   foreign Co-Lawyer for Ms. IM Chaem.

Trial Chamber will begin hearing evidence on the fourth trial topic in Case 002/02: Security Centres and Internal Purges

On Wednesday, 2 March 2016, the Trial Chamber will begin hearing evidence on the fourth trial topic in Case 002/02: Security Centres and Internal Purges. According to the Closing Order charging NUON Chea and KHIEU Samphan, the Communist Party of Kampuchea (CPK) destroyed Cambodia’s legal and judicial structures and replaced them with a network of security centres and execution sites in order to detain and reeducate or kill those suspected of engaging in hostile activities.

Co-Investigating Judges order the severance of Im Chaem from Case 004

The Co-Investigating Judges have ordered the severance of the proceedings against Im Chaem from Case 004 and the creation of a new case file, 004/01.

Supreme Court Chamber to resume Appeal Hearing in Case 002/01

The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has scheduled the resumption of the appeal hearing in Case 002/01 after having adjourned the hearing due to lack of proper legal representation for Nuon Chea, resulting from his International Co-lawyer not attending the Appeal Hearing scheduled on 17-19 November 2015 and his National Co-lawyer leaving the courtroom in spite of the Chamber’s order to remain present.  The Chamber will hear oral submissions on issues raised in the appeals, and the hearing is scheduled for 09:00 – 16:00 on 16, 17 and 1

Victims Support Section of the ECCC secures funds from UN Trust Fund to End Violence against Women

Victims Support Section (VSS) of the ECCC, in cooperation with Transcultural Psychosocial Organization (TPO) will carry out the second-phase of its project entitled “Promoting Gender Equality and Improving Access of Justice for Female and Gender-based Violence (GBV) Survivors of the Khmer Rouge (KR) Regime.” The UNTF/UN Women has provided the VSS/ECCC with a USD 1 million grant to be implemented over the three year duration of the project, commencing January 2016 under the non-judicial measures (NJM) framework of the VSS/ECCC.

ECCC Budget for 2016-2017 Published

Conclusion of judicial investigation against Im Chaem

The judicial investigation against Im Chaem was initiated following receipt of the Third Introductory Submission filed by the International Co-Prosecutor on 9 September 2009. The scope of the investigation was subsequently expanded by Supplementary Submissions filed by the International Co-Prosecutor on 18 July 2011, 24 April 2014, 5 August 2015, and 20 November 2015.

Mr Meas Muth charged in Case 003

On 14 December 2015, the International Co-Investigating Judge charged Mr Meas Muth with the following alleged crimes: − Genocide;− Crimes against Humanity, namely murder; extermination; enslavement; imprisonment; torture; persecution; other inhumane acts (inhumane treatment, enforced disappearances, forced labour, forced marriage, rape and attacks on human dignity due to conditions of detention);

On 9 December 2015, the International Co-Investigating Judge charged Mr Yim Tith with the following alleged crimes: − Genocide of the Khmer Krom;

Japan makes a new contribution of US$1.2 million to the ECCC

The Government of Japan has announced a new contribution of US$1,221,818 to the international component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).  The Government of Japan is the largest donor to the ECCC, and it has supported the court since its inception. With the new contribution, Japan’s total financial assistance to the ECCC will exceed US$83 million. “On behalf of the ECCC, we would like to express our gratitude to the Government of Japan for its continuous and generous financial contributions and support.

Evidence hearings in Case 002/02 shifts to treatment of the Vietnamese

Case 002/02 trial hearings recommence on 30 November 2015, with one further witness on the Trapeang Thma Dam worksite. The Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will then hear evidence related to charges of genocide and other crimes alleged against the Vietnamese minority in Cambodia during the period of Democratic Kampuchea. Ten witnesses and Civil Parties are currently scheduled to testify during this part of the trial in Case 002/02.

Supreme Court Chamber schedules appeal hearings

The Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has scheduled hearings relating to appeals in Case 002/01. The hearings are scheduled to take place from 09:00-11:30hrs and 13:30-16:00hrs on 17, 18 and 19 November 2015. Information about scheduling in Case 002/02

The Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia has informed the parties to Case 002/02 that there will be no hearings during the week of 19-22 October 2015 immediately following the Pchum Ben judicial recess. 

Australia pledges additional AUD 3,250,000

The Government of Australia has made a new pledge of AUD 3,250,000 to the international component of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). With this new pledge, the Government of Australia has provided financial assistance exceeding AUD 29 million. Australia is the second largest donor to the ECCC, and it has supported the Court since its inception.

ECCC’s weekly radio programme resumes on 10 September 2015 on WMC' radio station FM 102

A weekly radio talk show, “Khmer Rouge Leaders on Trial”, will be back on air every Thursday evening, from 6pm to 7pm, starting from 10 September 2015, on the Women’s Media Center of Cambodia (WMC)’s radio station, FM102, and its sub-stations nationwide.

First genocide charges to be heard at ECCC

Starting from 7 September 2015, the Trial Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) will for the first time hear evidence related to charges of genocide when the trial in Case 002/02 against Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea moves to the next trial sequence which focuses on allegations related to the treatment of the Cham group. Fourteen witnesses, Civil Parties and one expert are scheduled to testify during this part of the trial.

Michael Bohlander appointed as new Co-Investigating Judge

Following the nomination by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and the approval by the Supreme Council of the Magistracy, His Majesty the King Norodom Sihamoni has appointed Judge Michael Bohlander (Germany) as new International Co-Investigating Judge in the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC). He replaces Judge Mark Brian Harmon (USA).

Accused person Ieng Thirith dies

The Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has been informed by the legal guardian that the accused person Ieng Thirith passed away at approximately 10:30 am on 22 August 2015 in Pailin, Cambodia.

EU pledges 8.9 million EURO

The European Union (EU) has made a new pledge of EUR 8.9 million to the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) for 2015 and 2016. In 2015, the EU will contribute EUR 2 million to the national component and EUR 3.5 million to the international component of the ECCC.The breakdown of remaining EUR 3.4 million will be decided in 2016. The EU is one of the largest donors to the ECCC, having so far contributed a total of EUR 16.2 million since the Court’s inception in 2006.   

Press Briefing in advance of Trial Chamber’s hearing in Case 002/02

The Public Affairs Section of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) has the honour of inviting representatives of media to a press briefing in advance of Trial Chamber’s hearing in Case 002/02 against Khieu Samphan and Nuon Chea which will resume on 27 July 2015. The Trial Chamber will shift its focus to Trapeang Thma Dam in the Northwest Zone, the third and final worksite in Case 002/02. The press briefing will take place on Thursday 23 July 2015 from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, located at 64, 200 Oknha Men, Phnom Penh.
